This is notably different from the Gulf Coast Marathon data I analyzed, where most race days saw temperatures <strong>rise</strong> by 5-15 degrees during the race.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://newsletter.strideforecast.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading! In the dataset I studied, temperature increases during the race showed a measurable impact on pacing - about 1.6 seconds per mile per degree of warming. Tomorrow&#8217;s cooling trend means you&#8217;re getting a small tailwind effect from Mother Nature rather than fighting against rising temps.</p><p><strong>Wind is the wild card:</strong> 18-20 mph sustained northerly winds will be primarily a crosswind, with portions of the final miles potentially running into the wind. The model I built only accounts for temperature and doesn&#8217;t capture wind effects.</p><p><strong>What this means:</strong> Tomorrow&#8217;s conditions are more favorable from a temperature perspective than the warming scenarios in my analysis. The temperature factor that correlated with severe pacing issues on days with significant warming simply isn&#8217;t present tomorrow - though pacing discipline and wind management will still matter.</p><p><strong>The usual rules mostly apply:</strong> While going out too fast still costs you, cooler temperatures should make that penalty less severe than it would be on a hot day. Don&#8217;t let the nice weather make you reckless with early pacing, but you&#8217;ll likely have more margin for error than runners did on the warming race days in my analysis.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://newsletter.strideforecast.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading! Only 7.6% managed to negative split, while 35.5% faded by more than a full minute per mile.</p><h2><strong>What Drives Your Marathon Pace?</strong></h2><p>I analyzed six factors across 1,500+ marathon finishes:</p><ul><li><p>Your demographics (gender and age)</p></li><li><p>Race day temperature at the start</p></li><li><p>How much temperatures rose during the race</p></li><li><p>Whether you went out too fast in the first six miles</p></li></ul><p><strong>Here&#8217;s what I found:</strong> These six factors alone explained nearly half of the variation in finish times.</p><p>Think about that&#8212;with training plans, fueling strategies, gear choices, and hundreds of other variables at play, just these six factors capture about 43% of the performance puzzle. That tells you how much weather and pacing strategy really matter.</p><p><strong>Here&#8217;s what stood out:</strong></p><h3><strong>Temperature Change Matters More Than You Think</strong></h3><p>For every degree Fahrenheit the temperature rises during your race, you&#8217;ll slow down by about <strong>1.6 seconds per mile</strong> (based on the regression coefficient of 0.027 minutes per mile).</p><p><strong>What this means for a full marathon:</strong></p><ul><li><p>5&#176;F warming = ~3.5 minutes slower overall (0.7 sec/mi &#215; 26.2 miles)</p></li><li><p>10&#176;F warming = ~7 minutes slower overall (1.6 sec/mi &#215; 26.2 miles &#215; 10&#176;F)</p></li><li><p>15&#176;F warming = ~10.5 minutes slower overall</p></li></ul><p><strong>Here&#8217;s the key insight:</strong> This is separate from the starting temperature effect (which adds 1.0 second per mile per degree). A race that starts at 60&#176;F and climbs to 70&#176;F hits you twice&#8212;once for starting in warmth, and again for the 10-degree rise during the race.</p><h3><strong>Going Out Fast Is Expensive</strong></h3><p>For every minute per mile you go out faster than your overall average pace, you pay a <strong>1.4 minute penalty</strong> on your overall pace.</p><p><em>Translation: Start 30 seconds per mile too fast? You&#8217;ll likely finish 42 seconds per mile slower than if you&#8217;d paced evenly.</em></p><div><hr></div><h2><strong>What This Means By Performance Level</strong></h2><div <strong>The combination of going out too fast PLUS rising temperatures was particularly brutal.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h2><strong>Practical Race Day Advice</strong></h2><h3><strong>1. Adjust Your Target Pace for Predicted Warming</strong></h3><p>If the forecast shows 10&#176;F+ warming during your race:</p><p><strong>Conservative approach:</strong> Start 15-20 seconds per mile slower than your goal pace</p><ul><li><p>A 10&#176;F warming costs ~16 seconds per mile (1.6 sec/mile &#215; 10&#176;F)</p></li><li><p>Add buffer for individual heat sensitivity and you&#8217;re looking at 15-20 sec/mi adjustment</p></li></ul><p><strong>Moderate approach:</strong> Start 10-12 seconds per mile slower</p><ul><li><p>Accounts for the direct temperature impact with minimal safety margin</p></li><li><p>Best for runners who&#8217;ve trained in similar conditions</p></li></ul><p><strong>Aggressive approach:</strong> Start at goal pace but prepare mentally for 7-10 minute slowdown</p><ul><li><p>At minimum, acknowledge the warming will cost you time</p></li><li><p>Don&#8217;t panic when you start slowing at mile 15-18</p></li></ul><h3><strong>2. The First 10K Is Not a Victory Lap</strong></h3><p>Your watch will feel easy in the first 6 miles. That&#8217;s the point.</p><p><strong>Rule of thumb:</strong> If you&#8217;re running more than 10-15 seconds per mile faster than your goal pace at mile 6, you&#8217;re borrowing time from mile 20-26&#8212;with interest.</p><p><strong>The penalty is severe:</strong> For every minute per mile you go out too fast, you&#8217;ll pay a 1.4 minute per mile penalty overall. Go out 30 seconds too fast? Expect to finish 42 seconds per mile slower than if you&#8217;d started at goal pace.</p><h3><strong>3. Calculate Your Temperature Tax</strong></h3><p>The model reveals two separate temperature penalties:</p><p><strong>Starting temperature:</strong> ~1 second per mile per degree F</p><ul><li><p>Racing at 60&#176;F vs 50&#176;F = 10 seconds per mile penalty (4.4 minutes total)</p></li></ul><p><strong>Temperature rise during race:</strong> ~1.6 seconds per mile per degree F</p><ul><li><p>10&#176;F warming during race = 16 seconds per mile penalty (7 minutes total)</p></li></ul><p><strong>Combined impact example:</strong></p><ul><li><p>Start at 55&#176;F, finish at 65&#176;F (10&#176;F rise)</p></li><li><p>Starting temp penalty: 55&#176;F &#215; 1 sec/mi = 55 seconds/mile</p></li><li><p>Warming penalty: 10&#176;F &#215; 1.6 sec/mi = 16 seconds/mile</p></li><li><p><strong>Total: 71 seconds per mile slower = 31 minutes over the full marathon</strong></p></li></ul><h3><strong>4. Know Your Personal Heat Tolerance</strong></h3><p>Traveling from a cool climate to a warm destination race? The model suggests you&#8217;re at higher risk for fade regardless of fitness.</p><p><strong>Strategy for destination marathoners:</strong></p><ul><li><p>Arrive 3-5 days early if possible for partial heat acclimation</p></li><li><p>Prioritize hydration from 48 hours before the race</p></li><li><p>Consider that your &#8220;training pace&#8221; was established in different conditions</p></li></ul><h3><strong>5. Even Pacing Isn&#8217;t Conservative&#8212;It&#8217;s Smart</strong></h3><p>Only 39.6% of runners managed to stay within 30 seconds per mile of even pacing. But those who did likely finished closer to their potential.</p><p><strong>The math is brutal:</strong> There is a 1.4&#215; multiplier on aggressive starts.</p><ul><li><p>Start 20 seconds per mile too fast &#8594; finish 28 seconds per mile slower overall (20 &#215; 1.4 = 28)</p></li><li><p>Start 30 seconds per mile too fast &#8594; finish 42 seconds per mile slower overall</p></li><li><p>Start 1 minute per mile too fast &#8594; finish 1:24 per mile slower overall</p></li></ul><p>Even pacing eliminates this penalty entirely.</p><h2><strong>The Bottom Line</strong></h2><p>Marathon pacing is physiologically unforgiving, and weather amplifies the consequences of poor strategy.</p><p><strong>If you&#8217;re racing Gulf Coast Marathon (or any marathon with potential warming):</strong></p><ol><li><p><strong>Check the hourly forecast</strong>, not just the start time temperature</p></li><li><p><strong>Calculate the predicted temperature change</strong> during your race window (typically 3-5 hours)</p></li><li><p><strong>Add 1.6 seconds per mile for every degree of warming</strong> to your target pace</p><ul><li><p>5&#176;F warming = add 8 sec/mi (3.5 min total)</p></li><li><p>10&#176;F warming = add 16 sec/mi (7 min total)</p></li><li><p>15&#176;F warming = add 24 sec/mi (10.5 min total)</p></li></ul></li><li><p><strong>Start conservatively</strong>&#8212;the penalty for going out too fast (1.4&#215; multiplier) is worse than the temperature penalty</p></li></ol><p><strong>The runners who finish strong aren&#8217;t lucky. They&#8217;re disciplined in the first half and honest about the weather.</strong></p><p></p><p></p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://newsletter.strideforecast.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading! Gulfport, MS and surround areas typically experience December temperatures ranging from the upper 40s to low 60s&#176;F, with occasional cold fronts pushing conditions into the 40s and rare warm days climbing into the 70s. Humidity remains moderate compared to summer months, and the coast sees occasional rain but generally avoids the extreme heat that challenges summer marathoners. However, this seemingly mild window masks significant year-to-year variability&#8212;as our historical data reveals, Gulf Coast race conditions have ranged from crisp 47&#176;F mornings to surprisingly warm 72&#176;F afternoons. Understanding these patterns is essential because even small temperature swings impact pacing strategy and performance. In this section, we&#8217;ll examine five years of actual race-day weather observations to show you what conditions runners have faced, how they&#8217;ve varied, and how to build a flexible race strategy that prepares you for whatever December brings.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" heat but warm enough to avoid excessive cold stress. Gulf Coast&#8217;s average of 60.4&#176;F runs just above this optimal window, pushing the race into the heat-management zone for most runners. While some years dip into the ideal range with lows around 47&#176;F, most race conditions trend warmer, with temperatures frequently climbing into the 65&#8211;72&#176;F range where performance penalties accelerate. This consistent drift above the ideal threshold is precisely why Gulf Coast demands a weather-focused pacing strategy. As seen below, only two years saw race temps within the ideal range.</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png" width="418" height="359.7265415549598" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:642,&quot;width&quot;:746,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:418,&quot;bytes&quot;:35138,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/png&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:false,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://newsletter.strideforecast.com/i/180796436?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!y2lq!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa4ac6618-3222-4356-ac2e-c5942e494431_746x642.png 1456w" sizes="100vw"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>Temperature changes throughout the race day impact your performance. Runners are heading generally eastward/southeast from Pass Christian to Biloxi along the coast. If winds are from the north/northeast (typical for early December), runners would be experiencing a crosswind or slight headwind for much of the race depending on the exact course routing along Highway 90.</p><p>Understanding Gulf Coast Marathon&#8217;s weather patterns&#8212;temperature ranges, hourly warming trends, and wind conditions&#8212;transforms how you approach race day. The data shows you&#8217;ll likely start in the high 40s to low 50s and warm into the 60s-70s by mid-race, with most years experiencing 9-12&#176;F of warming from start to finish. Add in the typical north/northeast winds creating a crosswind or headwind along the eastward coastal route, and you have a recipe that demands strategic pacing. Your training prepared you for the distance&#8212;now let the weather data prepare you for the conditions you&#8217;ll actually face.</p><p>Now that we understand Gulf Coast&#8217;s weather patterns, the next question becomes: how do these conditions actually impact different runners? Gulf Coast attracts runners primarily between ages 30-50 who are capable of finishing in the competitive 4-5 hour window. Gender and age are both strong predictors of finish time, with roughly a 25-minute male advantage and a 35-40 minute spread between the youngest and oldest runners. These baseline patterns give us a framework for race planning, but here&#8217;s where weather becomes critical: these demographic and age-related patterns tell us only part of the story. The real variable that shifts finish times unpredictably from year to year is weather. Temperature, humidity, and wind don&#8217;t care about your gender or age&#8212;they impact every runner. In the next section, we&#8217;ll examine Gulf Coast&#8217;s weather history and discover how conditions have impacted performance over the years to help build personalized pacing strategies that account for the forecast you&#8217;re actually facing on race day.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://newsletter.strideforecast.com/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Thanks for reading!
